Jobs and work experience with XE Website Solutions Ltd

A variety of roles and skills are needed to create and promote web sites. It is not a glamorous occupation although it can be satisfying for the right kind of people. We deal mainly with holiday accommodation web sites such as Country Cottages Online.

As with any business, the following skills are essential:

Good English Language skills – to be able to write and edit content for the web. A web editor needs to write information with both search engines and people in mind; to be able to think of headings and sub headings that contain appropriate key phrases, to understand layout, navigation and the elements of what constitutes a good web site.

Administration skills

An orderly mind is necessary to be able to ‘file’ images and data in a logical manner and to retrieve them quickly when required.

Good general IT skills

Image processing which includes resizing, enhancement and optimisation for the web.
The use of a word processing package to write and edit content.
Spreadsheet for records and administration.
Database for record processing.

Programming skills

Website creation then leads to maintenance. Technology constantly moves on and the websites of yesterday have to readable across a range of devices that use different operating systems and screen sizes. Software updates also necessitate website updates.

Social Media Skills

Advanced knowledge of Facebook, Twitter and other social media applications is useful.

Work experience students

We receive enquiries from students seeking work experience. Most students have insufficient knowledge or experience of web sites to be of value to us and most take up time that we do not have. Students in turn cannot obtain employment until they have experience. We may occasionally take on a student with an enthusiastic attitude who has some of the skills we require. Send in your CV and let us know why you wish to work for us. This will always be a temporary role of a few weeks duration during a school or university holiday.

Job Applications

We welcome job applications from graduates with a wide range of skills. Language skills are most important, followed by an understanding of how the web works. Knowledge of HTML and simple image processing are essential. PHP programming experience is desirable.

We also have opportunities for PR and marketing graduates from time to time.

Tell us how you would enhance the business and we will listen. Permanent roles would be based in Tring, Hertfordshire. Applications for part-time work are welcome.
